Photo Tips
:
Anyone can take a photo. Cameras have been around for a long time and digital technology has made it cheap and easy to produce good pictures.
Becoming familiar with your camera’s functions is the first step in taking great shots. You can’t very well refer to the owner’s manual and catch a fleeting moment at the same time. Try shooting using all the separate functions to see how each setting affects your picture. Using manual settings is always best to fine tune a photo but many cameras that don’t have that option offer enough preset settings to cover the range.
Once you’re at an event, take a couple of test shots. If you are using a film camera that isn’t fully manual, double check that the film speed is set correctly, lens caps are off, and gauge your light meter so that you’re ready.
When shooting, take more than one shot of each scene. Some cameras make this difficult, but taking the extra time for a few more shots may cover you in case someone blinks, for instance.
Move around and shoot from different angles. This will not only change the scene, but the lighting as well. Take a group shot, but also get close ups and people in action. Pictures tell stories too, keep that in mind.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and don’t be afraid to show us.
Glossary
:
Blog
: The word “blog” comes from the term weblog that means a journal that is posted online. You can publish your thoughts, feelings, opinions, and share your experiences and it can be viewed by the public and be interactive. Some people write about their daily life, while others write on certain topics.
Download: Download means to copy content like text and photos from the web and put it onto your computer’s hard drive. You can also download software programs from the web. Be careful, some are free but some require a fee.
JPEG
: a Jpeg (pronounced jay-peg) is a type of file that describes how you can save a photo. When you save a photo, you will have the option to save it as a number of different files. For your iTown, your photos must be saved as jpegs in order to be submitted. You will see the type of file your photo is after the period in your file name. For example: myphoto.jpg.
Mac vs. PC
: Mac’s and PC’s are the two different types of computers available to the average consumer. Macs are made by Apple Computers while PCs are made by several manufacturers like Dell and Gateway. They have different operating systems meaning the way that you file things and access programs is different. However, both carry most of the same programs or similar versions of the same program like Microsoft Word for example. Accessing the photos on your digital camera is one way that the two are different.
Web Browser
: A web browser is a software program that lets you access the World Wide Web also known as the internet. Common browsers are Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer and Safari which comes with macs. If you have a PC, you can use any web browser. If you have a Mac, you will need to download a browser called Firefox in order to be able to view all the options available on your iTown.
